🎓 What I Learned from College — Grace Anchored Edition
I won’t bore you with the academic side of college — instead, I want to share what I learned from a life and faith perspective. I did everything out of order: kids first, marriage later, and college much later. But God used that season to teach me lessons that go far beyond textbooks.
Lesson #1 — Don’t Let Others Sabotage Your Goals
During my college journey, I saw posts and memes mocking the value of higher education. Some were harmless, but others stung — especially as someone going back to school later in life.
But here’s what I learned: not everyone will understand your calling, and that’s okay.
Galatians 6:4 — “Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else.”
God calls each of us to different paths. Stay faithful to what He’s put in front of you, even if others don’t see the value.
Lesson #2 — College Is Stressful, and Life Goes On
Some semesters, I questioned why I was even doing this. I had to keep going back to my “why” — for my family, my future, and my own growth.
James 1:12 — “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised.”
College taught me perseverance — and that life doesn’t pause just because you have homework.
Lesson #3 — Homework Doesn’t Come with Reminders
Nobody is chasing you down in college to do your work. This season taught me self-discipline and time management.
Proverbs 6:6-8 — “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.”
I learned to manage my own schedule, own my deadlines, and take responsibility — valuable lessons I carry into my professional life.
Lesson #4 — Grades Can Be Disappointing
No matter how much I studied, some results were disappointing. But I had to remind myself: my GPA does not define my worth.
Colossians 3:23 — “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
Grades mattered, but the deeper lesson was learning to give my best effort — and then trust God with the outcome.
Lesson #5 — College Is a Marathon, Not a Sprint
Each semester stretched me more than the last. I had to pace myself and focus on finishing well.
Hebrews 12:1 — “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.”
College became a spiritual practice of endurance — teaching me to trust God’s timing instead of rushing.
Lesson #6 — The Job Isn’t Waiting at the Finish Line
Graduation wasn’t the end; it was just the beginning. I had to network, gain experience, and trust God to open the right doors.
Proverbs 16:3 — “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.”
Joining professional groups like SHRM before graduation gave me a head start, and God was faithful to provide opportunities at the right time.
✨ Final Thoughts
College wasn’t easy, but it shaped me into who I am today — resilient, disciplined, and faith-driven. It gave me a new perspective not only as a professional but also as a parent, mentor, and wife.
Philippians 1:6 — “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
God used my college years to prepare me for the work I do now — in HR, in ministry, and here at The Grace Anchored Journey. If you’re in a hard season of study, work, or growth, keep pressing on. He’s building something beautiful in you, one lesson at a time.
